The Gulf

Lammy Award-Winning Southern Drama. The divide between Kendra and Betty mimics the very world that devours them: a vast and polarizing abyss. On a quiet summer evening, somewhere down in the Alabama Delta, Kendra and Betty troll the flats looking for red fish.  After Betty begins diagnosing Kendra’s dead-end life with career picks from What Color is Your Parachute, their routine fishing excursion takes a violent turn.

"And the explosion comes with the conking out of motor and the smell of roses. And you will not believe what happens a few feet from your own eyes. The power of it, the unexpected nature of it .... Cefaly a marvel of details built on silence as well as language."   DC Metro Theatre Arts

"Doubtless, in the lives of Kendra and Betty — hearty women working menial jobs in the Bubba-infested backwaters of southern Alabama — there have been brushes with bigotry. But in this world premiere the canny Cefaly, who has an ear for the cadence of the region, is far more interested in the wounds Kendra and Betty have inflicted on each other, and whether whatever comfort they find in each other’s arms outweighs the pressure of their rapidly diverging goals and expectations." The Washington Post

"Took my breath away. She built a world with words, and her two characters make the entire world come alive on their boat."  d.ager

"We need more voices like Audrey Cefaly's in theater -- ones not interested in any easy answers or comfortable conclusions, but instead willing to allow characters conflict and moments of grace."
