Fin and Euba by Audrey Cefaly

The setting is a front porch, Autumn, late evening in the Florida panhandle. Fin and Euba are friends and co-workers at a paper mill in Cantonment, Florida. They also share space in a rooming house, which they are desperately trying to escape, due to the tyrannical landlady who has a penchant for strict rules and tacky yard art. Unbeknownst to Euba, Fin submits some of Euba's amateur photos to Life Magazine. Euba receives a reply from Life, but is reluctant to open it for fear or rejection, or worse…acceptance. Fin and Euba sit on the porch drinking, smoking, flicking ashes into a coffee can, and contemplating their lives and their plans for escape.

MISS V
Ned.

NED
Hmn?

MISS V
I have a serious question for you.

NED
OK.

MISS V
Do you think it's possible that a person could live almost an entire lifetime make-believing like all she ever needed was not much more than God and pretty purses?

(beat)

NED
Come again?

MISS V
How can I put this? Billy Ruthcoe.

NED
Billy Ruthcoe.

MISS V
Two years ago, famous incident, Brother Herbert was guest pastor over at 1st Baptist. Billy Ruthcoe, you remember, got so carried away in the moments just after he was baptized, he just couldn't contain himself and he made like he was climbing out of the water to go and dry off…but instead of doin that, he turned around and came running back and did a full out cannonball into the baptismal font.

NED
You want to do a cannonball into the baptismal font?

MISS V
No. No - yes! Yes, I do! That’s exactly what I want to do.

NED
You want the keys to the church...

(Pause)

MISS V
That is just like a man. I don’t want you to give me the keys to the church Ned. I want you to sit quietly and make all your sandwiches and look up from time to time with a knowing expression and shake your head in agreement or say I know it, I know it... or just maybe listen quietly and when it’s your turn to talk just mirror back to me once in a while what I’ve said, so I can let it go, is that too much to ask?

NED
Couldn’t I just give you the keys...

MARISOL
Oh, yeah, and that’s another thing. Let’s talk about that. Garrincha. Why do you call me that?

ROBERTO
Is it a problem?

MARISOL
Uh, yeah, it is. The whole kitchen is saying it now, thanks to you.

ROBERTO
Garrincha! The most famous footballer in all of Brazil, aside from Pele of course.

MARISOL
Of course!

ROBERTO
(interrupting)
I call you Garrincha, out of respect. He was a survivor, and so are you.

MARISOL
He died of chirrhosis of the liver! In his fifties.

ROBERTO
How do you know this?

MARISOL
I Googled.

ROBERTO
Googood?

MARISOL
GOOGLED! I don’t like it.

ROBERTO
Bella. This is upsetting to you?

MARISOL
Yes. Yes, it is upsetting to me Roberto.

ROBERTO
If you want me to stop I will stop.

MARISOL
Thank you.

(pause)

ROBERTO
I cannot.

MARISOL
Yes you can.

ROBERTO
No.

MARISOL
Roberto.

ROBERTO
No.

MARISOL
Why not?

ROBERTO
It is how I see you.

MARISOL
As a drunk, middle-aged, dead soccer player?

ROBERTO
Yes-No bella!!!

MARISOL
Then what?

ROBERTO
Two years ago, you come into work, you’re upset, you have a new pair of eh, brown eh... pantelone...eh...trouser. You say to me, Roberto...look at my feet. I say, OK. And I look at them. And you say... do you see anything unusual? I say... No...I see two feet. You say to me, Roberto! Clearly! My left leg is shorter than my right. And I say to you, Marisol, this is ridiculous, your legs, they are the same. And you give me this look in your eye.... (seeing Marisol’s scowling face) That one right there, that’s the one...and you slam down the tray and walk away, and we never speak on it again. But I remember. I keep in my mind. And then it came to me.Garrincha. He was known for his drinking, yes, but more than this, he had the one leg, six centimeter shorter than the next, and still he became a legend.

MARISOL
Are you serious?

ROBERTO
A legend!

MARISOL
OK...as much as I adore that comparison, and I do, I really love that... umn... I am not a legend, Roberto. I am a waitress with a dirty apron and aching feet -

ROBERTO
(overlapping)
Dai! Non dire cazzate.

MARISOL
...and pasta in my hair, Roberto!!! Do you see this?

Yeah, that's how come you watch that show all the time, with the Y incision.

KENDRA
Dr. G. is not a moritican, she is a medical examiner—that's a good one actually, write that down—and I don't watch it for the dead people, I told you that already.
